Following the success of the 2018 National Television Awards, we were excited to be invited to design the set for this year’s awards show. Staged in London’s O2 Arena, and broadcast live on ITV, the awards celebrated the best of UK television as voted for by the public.
The concept behind the design is the idea of disparate elements coming together to create whole – a celebration of diversity and unity at the same time. Following on from NTA 2018, the 2019 set again made use of bright hues and petal like shapes.
The asymmetric helical form captured a frozen moment in time as two ribbons of petals danced around the stage; surrounding it in a swirl of colour. An LED video backdrop extended this into the digital realm, and brought the form to life in the background of the presenter camera views that made up the majority of the live broadcast. Small LED lights embedded within the form allowed it to sparkle and pulse with rich colour throughout the show.
Parametric modelling was used to generate and optimize the design in order to maximize the scale and impact of the sculptural form within the available budget. A lightweight design using near-transparent scenic nets was again used to allow for the appearance of a form floating in space.
