Mark Fisher writes:
The Superbowl XXXV halftime show was a rock show in the middle of the stadium, starring *NSYNC and Aerosmith.
The stage had to be built on the field during the commercial break following the first half of the game, and taken down during the commerical break before the start of the second half.
The stage was designed to be erected in 4 minutes 30 seconds, and taken down in four minutes.
The stage was built by 450 volunteers from the Tampa Bay area. The volunteers erected the stage in front of the 78,000 audience in the stadium. The construction of the stage was such an amazing performance that the whole stadium cheered as the final lighting catamaran was hoisted into place. The stage stretched from side-line to side-line across the full width of the football field - a distance of 150ft. The main stage was 60ft across. Lighting towers on the stage created a canopy 50ft high.
The show began with *NSYNC running onto the field pursued by 4000 fans. The fans and the volunteers created a live audience around the stage to add atmosphere to the show. *NSYNC ran up stairs onto the stage and immediately launched into 'Bye Bye Bye'. Steve Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith entered at the end of the opposite runway to perform 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing'. *NSYNC followed with 'It's Gonna be Me'. Aerosmith followed with 'Jaded'. Then both bands came together to perform 'Walk this Way' with guest appearances by Britney Spears, Mary J Blige and Nelly. The show was performed with live vocals on all mikes. Joe Perry's guitar was live, with backing tracks for the rest of the music. The TV broadcast of the show achieved a rating of 40% in the USA, an audience of 89m households or approx 115m people.
